NPC Aggregate in Black Economic Empowerment Partnership with NAWA
In a memo to staff at Margate Quarry this week, Managing Director of NPC Aggregate, Avi Bhoora, said, “I am pleased to announce that an agreement was signed this morning for the sale of 26% of the shares in South Coast Stone Crushers (Pty) Ltd to the KZN Chapter of the NATIONAL AFRICAN WOMEN”S ALLIANCE (NAWA). The introduction of a Strategic BEE Partner to our business has been long awaited and I am certain that this will add much value to our business.”
South Coast Stone Crushers (Pty) Ltd which trades as NPC Aggregate, is now a part of the NPC Aggregate and Concrete division, having been acquired by Natal Portland Cement (NPC) as part of its diversification strategy in 2004.
For NAWA, which is a broad-based company with representation in all nine of the country’s provinces with investments in the petroleum, shipping and construction industries, this is the first such venture with a mining company in South Africa. One hundred percent owned, controlled and managed by previously disadvantaged women from various professions, business and industries, NAWA, is comprised nationally of about 1 000 direct women shareholders with over 4 000 direct beneficiaries.
As part of the shareholding agreement, NAWA, enjoys a degree of ownership and control by having two seats on the NPC Aggregate Board, which according to NAWA (KZN) CEO, Mrs. Noluthando Langeni , complied with BEE criterion in regards to transfer of skills.
NPC, the province’s premier cement manufacturing company, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Portuguese cement giant CIMPOR-Cimentos de Portugal, the 10th largest cement producer in the world. Headquartered at Margate Quarry, both NPC Aggregate and NPC Concrete have embarked on massive expansion programmes to cope with increased demand in the market.
